Questions

Common Questions

Do I need a GP referral?

Yes, you will need a GP referral so we can review your full medical history before your appointment. Ask your GP to refer you to Beacon Pain Clinic, and then book your consultation here or call us on 01 293 7177.

Will I become dependent on pain medication?

When medication is prescribed and monitored properly, the risk of dependence is much lower. We review what you are taking regularly and aim to use the lowest effective dose. If you are worried about dependence, we can discuss this at your appointment.

Can you help reduce my medication?

Yes. If you are on a lot of pain medication or want to reduce what you take, we can put together a gradual reduction plan. This is done slowly and safely with regular reviews.

How often is my medication reviewed?

We typically review medication at each follow-up appointment. How often that is depends on your condition and what you are taking. We will agree a review schedule with you.

Is it covered by insurance?

We accept all the major insurers. We recommend checking with your insurer to confirm what is covered under your specific policy.

What happens at my first appointment?

Your first visit lasts about 30 to 45 minutes. The specialist will go through your medical history and current medication, carry out an examination if needed, and discuss your pain with you. From there we create a medication plan that works for you.
